Torquay is a prime holiday resort on the south coast of Devon in southwest England. It is renowned for its mild climate and is often known as the English Riviera. Torbay is the bay whose coastline contains the resorts of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. See web-site: www.gotorbay.com
Torquay is a holiday resort where there are many attractions for visitors. Agatha Christie lived here and there are exhibitions of her work and life at the Torquay Museum and Torre Abbey: a manor house built on the remains of a medieval monastery. Kents Cavern is a natural cave with stalactites and stalagmites where the remains of wild animals, now extinct, have been found.
On the harbour, we have “Living Coasts” which features bird and wild life on the coast; it is managed by Paignton Zoo which is also well worth a visit.
The Gulf Stream allows semi-tropical plants to grow in the gardens and country parks open to the public. Within the boundary of Torquay is Cockington Village where thatched cottages continue traditional village life and the manor house, Cockington Court, now has a craft centre. The parish church was founded in 1210.
There are many castles and places of historic interest nearby and the cities of Exeter (ancient Roman city with a beautiful cathedral) and Plymouth (National Aquarium and Marine Centre), Dartmoor National Park, the Jurassic coast World Heritage Site of pre-historic fossils and the Eden project where plants from the tropics and temperate zones of the world grow in two massive Biomes. It is possible to visit each of these on a whole or half-day trip.
Torquay tennis club welcomes visitors, swimming is available at a private indoor pool in a local hotel or in the sea for the more physically fit! In summer, there are boat trips around Torbay and sailing schools offer tuition and opportunities to charter sailing yachts. There are many golf courses in the area and tuition can be arranged. At weekends, we often explore Dartmoor of go cliff walking.
